Very much enjoyed this letter to the Huntsville, Ontario newspaper. Yes, it’s in Canada, and we’re a site about gun laws in America, but it seems that no matter where you go in the world, gun clubs and shooting ranges are equally disliked by everyone.
What poetic justice it was to pick up August 16 Forester and see the front page. In the top corner was the gun club versus the Madill Association, and the bottom corner showed arrests being made of people in possession of a sawed-off shotgun. No, not all gun owners are violators of the law, but some just have no respect for other people.
Having an outdoor shooting range in a residential area is a prime example of total disrespect. Then to throw in a pile of stinking waste, called SoundSorb, the odour of which at times turns your stomach, is simply disgusting.
There’s the environmental problems that come from shooting large amounts of lead into the soil. There’s the noise problems, which almost everyone that lives near a shooting range complains about. And then there’s the safety issue– guns aren’t safe no matter where they are, in a secured area or otherwise. Any way you look at it, the idea of a shooting range, especially one near a residential area, is just “absurd.”
It was stated in the paper by Kevin Stroud that the judge had no right to issue an injunction on this matter because it is a federal affair. People who read of the great gray mass that, after a rain, an orange/brown ooze runs onto and into the ground should realize that they elect the officials who govern this, same as they elect town officials. Everyone should vote, as the existence of their livelihood is everyone’s responsibility.
Mr. Stroud stated he was wishing to join the Madill Association. That sounds like a lawyer’s idea to me. The rest of the association brought money to the table to join the fight against the outdoor shooting range. How much will Mr. Stroud bring to the fight?
An outdoor shooting range in a neighbourhood of homes this close is absolutely absurd, and other considerations should be taken.
Considerations like not allowing the shooting range to operate in the first place. In Canada or the US, these places aren’t safe– the fewer of them we have around, the better.
