Steele’s Gun Shop Sells Exotic Guns to Anyone
We think we've found our new favorite gun store-- Steele's Gun Shop on Route 9 in Maryland. Charlie Steele isn't just interested in exotic and high powered guns, he's interested in selling them as fast and as quick as possible to anyone who wants one.
Anything weird and different -- we carry it," said Charlie Steele, owner of Steele's Gun Shop.
Steele has owned his shop since 1967, when it was originally located in Rehoboth Beach. After two years of doing business in the resort town Steele moved his shop to Lewes for another few years.
In 1973, Steele moved his business to the Midway Village Shops on Route 1 where he remained until this year.
In May, Steele moved his shop yet again to a much larger space on Route 9.
"It's three times larger," Steele said. "We have room for more products, a larger stock room -- the whole nine yards."
He said he is happy at the new location because it is quieter and away from the rat race of Route 1.
Steele said his shop specializes in exotic and hard to find weapons -- things you may not find at other gun retailers in Sussex County.
"Guys that want out of the ordinary, we cater to them," he said.
One example of this is a .50-caliber rifle equipped with a scope and a $4,275 price tag.
"It shoots a thousand yards easy," Steele said. "You won't find a .50-caliber at Wal-Mart."
That's right, you won't, because that gun has been put on the list of the top 5 threats in the country to nuclear power plants. The .50 caliber rifle can shoot down small planes on takeoff and landing, and yet Charlie Steele is ready and willing to sell it to anyone with cash and an ID. But you don't need a .50 cal to cause trouble after visiting Steele's store-- just try his "cowboy gun."
Steele said he also carries a Colt single action revolver which is extremely hard to come by.
"That's a cowboy gun," he said.
The Colt single action isn't an original from the Old West but it is custom made. Steele said he only has one which took him two years to get his hands on.
The Thompson machine gun Steele sells is reminiscent of the Roaring '20s and even comes with a violin carrying case.
But Steele's Gun Shop carries more than just specialized weaponry. Hunting season is approaching, and Steele's carries the firearms you need such as a camouflage Beretta rifle for hunting ducks and geese.
For the deer hunters Steele said he carries the Single Shot H&R Ultra Slug Hunter.
"It's highly accurate," he said.
Slug Hunter? Does that mean it's used to hunt slugs?
Steele's got quite the range of interests, including history.
In addition, Steele said he is a history buff and is intrigued by all sorts of past events.
"Whether it be the Old West, World War II, the Titanic or whatever -- I don't care."
Of course-- who could forget that great past event "the Old West"? And which gun is Steele's favorite?
With all that knowledge of history and weaponry Steele must have a favorite gun.
"My favorite guns are the ones that sell," he said.
Of course they are, Charlie. You just can't wait to get these guns out of your store and out into the street, can you? The bigger the barrel, the more expensive the gun, the faster it has to sell, right? Steele even calls the background check system "stupid"-- because, hey, it keeps him from his favorite guns right?
None of these guns are necessary. The .50 caliber is even in the process of being banned in more than a few states because of its overwhelming power and lethality. Steele is doing himself a favor by selling these guns, but he's also doing his community a disservice and an injury. We're sure the gun lobby is a huge fan of Steele-- and the way he sells guns, we're sure criminals are, too.
