The Western Kentucky University campus went under lockdown Wednesday after authorities received reports of altercations at two locations, including unconfirmed reports that weapons were involved and shots fired, officials said.

Police first received a report of an altercation involving weapons at the South Campus Building, at least a mile away from the main Bowling Green campus, said Robbin Taylor, the school’s vice president for public affairs.
Shortly afterward, a second report was received of shots fired at Pearce Ford Tower (PFT), the university’s largest residence hall, on the main campus, she said.
Authorities believe the reports stem from a single altercation that began at the South Campus Building and moved to the residence hall, Taylor said.Police are interviewing witnesses, but no one has confirmed that weapons were involved or that shots were fired in either location, she said.
According to reports, male and female students were involved in the altercation, Taylor said.
“Police have confirmed that there was a physical altercation not involving weapons between individuals that occurred in or near PFT, but the police are interviewing witnesses on the scene to determine if weapons are present or if shots were fired,” said a statement posted on the university’s Web site.
“At this time, the campus emergency warning system has been activated. Students and employees have been advised to remain indoors, in secure areas, until an ‘all clear’ is issued.”

“We are looking for someone,” she said. “We do not believe a gunman is on the loose. … We have made every effort to make sure our students are safe.”
