Chuch Heston

You know what's really sad is that I remember when Chuck Heston was regarded as a well-paid and competent actor. How he got sidetracked into this parody of himself is a lesson for all of us. He didn't need the money or the fame--he just got lost I think. I hope before he sinks into alzheimer's he has some lucid moments to reflect and consider what he's done.

something you (or someone) should bring to attention...

A friend of a friend apparently just drove from Chicago to South Carolina to buy a gun and kill himself in a hotel. Do South Carolina's weak gun laws encourage "suicide tourism"?

Had he stayed in Illinois, there would have been a waiting period, and he might have been around people who could have helped, but once on the road to a easy background-check free, no waiting hand-gun, there was no one who could even find him, 'til it was too late. Apparently he had an old felony on his record and shouldn't have even been able to get a gun. (the felony was having possession of a few pills from his brothers ritalin prescription years ago)

It might be interesting to find out how many out-of-staters die in south carolina with a recently purchased gun each year...

Your site is great- keep it up! Is it just me (I know it sin't since I've seen similar comments posted) but is the main argument of the Gunnuts just a little bit crazy. The Second Amendment. They take a Government document that purportedly supports their right to be paranoid, and that is their main exhibit against the very same Government from raping their women and castrating them?, not necessarily in that order. Whaaaa??? Look- this is a very corrupt Government right now, and maybe always was, but to blame sane people who want sane policies about gun ownership and equate that with potentially dangerous Government actions is ludicrous. Hey- wake up! The US Government has been into some pretty shady crap for a long time now, and do you think your little Magnum .57 or AK 47 is going to stop them when their tank or rocket equipped helicopter is knocking at your door? I doubt it, and you should too.

overly passionate patriots

I, like many who contribute to your site, am a gun owner. I also, however, advocate responsible gun ownership. I come from a family of veterans with a long history of service in war for our country, and I am thoroughly disgusted with the lack of cooperation between Americans regarding this issue. It seems that both liberals and conservatives are content to forecast doom with their slippery slope arguments of 1. guns have no place in this country and people will be constantly killed with our legal guns or 2. criminals are all out to get us and we must remain perched at our door with our eyes pried open ready to shoot intruders, and legal guns will fix this. This is just a reflection of our American tendency to have strong opinion, and our opinion can put us over a barrel in that we may take a strange viewpoint just to refute an opposing position. Let me settle this argument:

Conservatives, yes you really are psychos! You have the right to own a gun, but responsible ownership means keeping it in a safe and secure place until it is to be used. It seems that you people actually WANT a criminal to break into your home, just so you can experience the pleasure of killing a man. My grandfather was a sergeant in the US Army during WWII, and had to kill to defend our nation against the Axis. I was privy to many secrets prior to his passing, one being that he was haunted everyday by the men whose lives he took in war, and he regretted having to murder, however noble our cause was. Any man who has truly had to kill will never look forward to, or for that matter RELISH shooting a man dead. To entertain your viewpoint, sometimes criminals do break into homes, and if that should happen, by all means shoot him down, but don't ever anticipate such an event by such irresponsible actions as leaving out loaded guns or placing them under your pillows... just having a gun vault with a lock is often the best measure. And by the way, threatening others with death and politically-charged epiphets does not make you a patriot, it only means you are SICK and in need of help. You really should get in touch with your emotions.

Liberals... yes you really are pussies. We live in a country where there are some seriously twisted people, and with guns at that. Hell, just look at most of the contributors to this website. There are "responsible" gun owners who seem to be using their firearm for entertaining fantasies of coercion and death on their fellow countrymen. You should arm yourselves on principle alone. This place may be the good old US of A, but this is FAR from a utopia. In England, guns are outlawed, but thugs with numerous foreign monies and connections can easily get automatic weapons. Where do you think this leaves normal people in the UK? Besides, a gun can be a good thing to have for several reasons, among them protection, hunting, and target-shooting. As for the drunken rednecks who irresponsibly wave their firearms around whenever possible, the statistics speak for themselves; in their own time these folks will become a convincing argument for natural selection :). You should realize that Rome wasn't built in a day, and your idealism is beautiful, but a little misguided.

Bottom line: get a gun, store it RESPONSIBLY, use it when you NEED it. Quit bitching about guns, because they won't go away. Quit bitching about people who want to take away guns, because (to reiterate) guns will never go away. This is the USA, and we are still comrades, so love your AMERICAN brother, despite his apparent mental problems. Maybe when we stop senselessly arguing about the 2nd Amendment, we can turn our attention to the REAL problem in the increasing destruction of our 1st Amendment rights under our current administration. Take care America, you are all in my prayers.

Yours truly,

Brian W. Castle

Shame!

You "Gun Guys," are a bunch of low-life provocateurs.

The Night Before An NRA Christmas

Your piece posted "The Night Before An NRA Christmas" by Michael Maher, Ammunition Clerk at Mike Magnum's Apple Valley, CA...This piece truly sucks! While I purchase many and support gun ownership, I won't be buying anything from anyone that posts this kinda crap.

Do the math

At current rates (19k murders per year) it will take our murderers over 368 years to kill 7 million people. This is something that the police officers and soldiers of the Third Reich accomplished in less than decade.

Across his thiry-year career, Stalin killed anywhere from 10 million to 60 million of his own people. (It seems to me that most estimates range from 20 million to 40 million.) At their current rate, it will take our murderers anywhere from 526 years to 3,157 years to duplicate this -- 1,052 years to 2,105 years, if we stay with what I consider to be the more accurate stats.

The Khmer Rouge killed anywhere from 1 million to 3 million Cambodians, all in something like four years, iirc. Since there were only 8 million Cambodians to start with, they killed at least 12 percent of the population, and perhaps as much as 37 percent. In our nation of 280 million people, that would be the equivalent of anywhere from 33 million dead, to 100 million dead. It's something our current murderers could accomplish only in 1,736 years to 5,263 years of hard work.

Clearly, claims that the U.S. is the "Murder Capitol of the World," are overblown. I figure it's a creation of a media that sells advertising space by making us afraid to leave our homes. (If you do a search, you can find articles mentioning that news ratings increased during the sniper attacks -- a period of time when the news outlets all "forgot" to mention the extreme unlikelyhood of getting shot by this guy.)

As for an armed population -- one that can possibly defend itself against future Hitlers, Stalins, and Pol Pots -- I'm all for it. Yes, I understand the argument that it would be pretty hard for a bunch of civilians with "pea shooters" to defend themselves against the U.S. military, but the aforementioned tyrants were never interested in totally destroying their people. Instead, they wanted to control them through fear. (The title of one chapter in a bio on Stalin is, "Terror by day, terror by night.")

An unarmed population can easily be made into slaves. Their homes, businesses, and other property can be confiscated without much trouble. They themselves can be harvested for hair, false teeth, eyeglasses, and implants. (One can only guess why the Nazis burned the Jews, rather than send their remains to rendering plants, to be made into chemicals, lipstick, and dog food. Do a search on "rendering plants" for the rather gross details on how that industry functions today.)

All a tyrant can do to an armed population is destroy them -- and there's no profit in that.

Kirk Thrasher

Kirk, I don't know what planet you live on, but this country is quite heavily armed and the population STILL is a mental slave to post 9-11 fears, all of which the Bush administration plays like a cheap accordian to keep you occupied while they rob the bank. - Mike

Hunting accident in Georgia

About 2 weeks ago, in rural Georgia, a boy accidentally shot and killed his father while they were deer hunting. The boy, age 11, saw a movement and thought it was a deer. It was his Dad.
I live in Georgia...(not by choice) where owning guns and hunting is "Mah heritage."

And the beat goes on.
